Mauritius lets you take your island vacation to the next level
Mauritius is a remarkable island destination – it’s one of our favorite paradise getaways. The combination of palm-fringed beaches and mountains offers the perfect backdrop for a very wide range of activities, so you can enjoy Mauritius your way whether you prefer an active vacation or some serious relaxation.
The Indian Ocean features some of the world’s most beautiful tropical islands, but few can compete with Mauritius when it comes to the sheer diversity of landscapes and activities. In this blog, we’ll be sharing our top 5 things to do in Mauritius.
Snorkeling
With warm, clear waters and untouched coral reefs close to the shore, Mauritius is a snorkeling hotspot. You can drop in on bustling coral communities and spend time enjoying the antics of colorful reef fish, or spend time in the company of sea turtles, dolphins and giant manta rays. The coast of the island features calm, shallow lagoons where you can swim and snorkel in safety, returning to the beach or your boat when it’s time for a snack or a drink.
Hiking
For a more active island experience, head inland for some world-class hiking. At Black River Gorges National Park, you can trek through indigenous rainforests that are rich in birdlife, flowers and butterflies – you may even spot the endangered pink pigeon. Numerous waterfalls (including the popular Alexandra Falls) provide spectacular views and wonderful photo opportunities. Other great hiking trips include visiting the Chamarel Waterfall – the highest in Mauritius – and the Trou aux Cerfs volcano for views over the island and surrounding ocean.
One of the most picturesque sights in Mauritius is located close to this last waterfall in the Seven Colored Earth Geopark. A walk to the dunes in this park will reveal bands of different colored earth, while the hike to the base of the waterfall includes the chance to take a refreshing swim in the pool beneath it. There are also giant Aldabra tortoises roaming the park.
Gastronomy
Thanks to its location, the culture, language and cuisine of the island all reflect influences from Africa, Asia and the Middle East. In addition, Mauritius, you’ll also be able to detect European flavors – a legacy of the colonial period.
The seafood is exceptional, with local fishermen returning to port each day with impossibly fresh fish. To really understand the gastronomy of Mauritius, however, you need to take a stroll through the streets and markets of the capital, Port Louis. Mauritius has an incredible street food scene, and sampling the many traditional dishes on offer is an adventure in itself. As you explore, you’ll be beguiled by fragrant herbs and spices, and tempted to try traditional snacks like gateaux piments (think spicy falafel balls), dholl puri (flatbread filled with chutney and pickles), or for a more substantial meal, fish vindaye or a biryani curry. As you’ve probably guessed by now, Mauritians enjoy chili!
If you have a sweet tooth, be sure to try napolitaines or creamy, coconutty poudine maïs.

When you visit Mauritius, relaxation definitely counts as an activity. Spending the day in a hammock or on a pool lounger reading a novel or simply watching the world go by is a wonderful way to destress and disconnect from the stresses and strains of everyday life. Mauritian people are known for their warmth and hospitality, and you can experience the very best of this when you stay at one of the island’s many resorts or boutique hotels.
