Accessible from both Praslin and La Digue, this top Seychelles dive site is known for its fascinating underwater landscape of caves and giant granite boulders. This stunning atoll is also reckoned to be one of the best dive sites in the Indian Ocean for swimming with green sea turtles.

Vilingili Coral Garden, Maldives

An ideal spot for beginners, this beguiling dive site teems with fish and corals, while the gentle currents make it easy to remain in one place and simply observe the life of the reef going on around you. Also look out for giris, which is the local word for shallow, circular reefs, often frequented by sea turtles. As in Seychelles, many luxury island resorts have “house reefs” just offshore that can be easily reached by beginners.

Djabeda Wreck, Mauritius

This Japanese fishing boat sank off Mauritius many years ago, and has since been reclaimed by Nature. It now serves as an artificial reef, covered in hard and soft corals – so much so that you might not at first realize it was once  a ship. The many holes and crevices in the wreck are now home to a wide variety of reef fish and octopus, while schools of small and large fish swim past, having accepted the wreck as part of their environment.
