What to pack… for the beach or the boat
Deciding what to pack for a luxury island vacation is usually fairly simple – just remember that less is more. Keep reading for more detailed advice from the Indian Ocean travel experts at Private Ocean Islands.
(Almost) everything will be provided
When you stay at the top luxury private islands and exclusive use villas in Seychelles, Zanzibar, Mauritius or the Maldives, you can take it for granted that your suite will be amply equipped for blissful moments on the beach or round the pool. Typical offerings include designer skincare and haircare products, stylish robes, fluffy towels and organic handmade snacks. As well as enjoying exploring new ranges of products and feeling pampered, this means that you can really cut down your list of what to pack.
Dress it up, dress it down
One of the best things about the barefoot luxury approach to vacations is that the only dress code is what you feel comfortable in – but then again, style is also an important consideration. Beachwear is naturally a must, but pair it something to cover up like a wrap, sarong or linen shirt for those moments when the ocean breezes pick up, or you want to take a stroll inland. A hat and sunglasses are essential, both for protecting your eyes from the sunlight sparkling off the ocean but also for preserving that all-important sense of mystique.
You’ll also appreciate having options for covering up if you visit island towns or villages, where social expectations may be more conservative than you’re used to. This is especially important in Zanzibar and the Maldives, where you should avoid revealing outfits, and wear clothing that covers your knees and shoulders.
You’ll have a choice of dining venues each evening, and you may want to pack something slightly more formal if you’ll be joining other guests for dinner, while a pair of heels or loafers can give your feet a break from thongs. We’d also recommend that you pack a light sweater or jacket, which can make time in spaces with aircon or on boat cruises more comfortable.
If you go down to the beach today…
You’ll no doubt find that it’s only a few steps away from your villa, suite or cabana. Still, it’s a good idea to bring a dedicated beach tote for your sunscreen (please don’t forget that!), water bottle and a good book, so add these essential items to your list of what to pack.
Disconnect to reconnect
One thing you may enjoy leaving behind – at least temporarily – is your phone. While many island properties now have full Wi-Fi throughout, the ultimate in luxury might actually be switching it off for a while. Your emails can wait; time with your family or working on your tan certainly can’t.
Stylish protection
If the lure of the waves proves too hard to resist, you’ll always have plenty of watersport options. Wearing a rash vest can protect you from the sun so that you can stay out there for longer, and will also provide an extra layer between your skin and any small stinging creatures that might also be swimming in the ocean.
And if you happen to forget something…
Don’t worry if you’re only reading our guide to what to pack when you’re already on the beach, fear not – most luxury resorts feature cute boutiques where you can buy resort-branded clothing, or items inspired by local culture. Trips to local markets are also great opportunities to purchase items that you simply won’t be able to buy elsewhere.
